Sanford Biggers bridges his interest in hip-hop culture as a Black artist with his experiences living in Asia. In Om, he portrays the Sanskrit symbol for “om” in three dimensions. Biggers’s multi-media work addresses the commodification of black culture and incorporates themes from hip-hop, urban culture, and Asian religions. Using discarded or found materials such as gladd bittles, turntables, and pianos, Biggers explores the origins and uses of such materials by different cultures.
