Alex Ito: Ocean Waves (An Open Relationship)
2014
Paint and plaster on wood panel
28 × 40 in
Courtesy of the artist

Alex Ito is in pursuit of the department store aesthetic—a monochromatic atmosphere, “a strange space of imitation, repetition, and twisted intimacy.” His 2014 work, Ocean Waves (An Open Relationship), paint and plaster on wood panel, calls to mind Rauschenberg’s revolutionary White Paintings from 1951. Ito plays with contrasting textures: smooth painted planes with intrusions of rough plaster. The artist’s work has been featured at the Museo Pino Pascali, Italy and Steve Turner Contemporary in Los Angeles.
