It's Still Time to Mourn: Dia Mater

It’s Still Time to Mourn: Dia Mater is one part of a continuing series of works titled Diary of Images created by Josely Carvalho. Each work responds to and protests against the US military offensive against Iraq in the Persian Gulf. The installation includes five _mihrab_-shaped windows inserted into the wall, which feature silk-screened images of the conflict between the Serbs and Muslims in Yugoslavia. Juxtaposed with these images are references to the ancient Babylonian goddess Tiamat, who is the primordial mother of all that exists, including the gods themselves. This installation serves to oppose not only the war, but also the treatment of women in Islamic nations.
