Witness to Dissent: Memory, Yearning and Struggle
Clarissa Sligh
Witness to Dissent: Memory, Yearning and Struggle is a multi-media exhibition that revisits the injustices of the Civil Rights Movement. Created by Clarissa Sligh, the installation interweaves Sligh’s own personal history with that of the movement’s. An activist early on, Sligh was the lead plaintiff in the first successful school desegregation case in Virginia in 1955. The fusion of Sligh’s own experiences with historical documents, such as video footage, new reports, and other archival materials, presents a powerful reminder of the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on contemporary society.
