Intersections

Jonathan Thomas

Intersections is an audio collage of field recordings collected on Canal Street in lower Manhattan. It focuses on the vocal register of the counterfeit economy of luxury goods; a surreptitious sector that announces itself in the musicality of hushed interpellation. While the footage was gathered on the streets of New York, it refers to a vibrant subsection of the contemporary cosmopolitan cities in which debates rage over intellectual property, informal labor, immigration, and participation in the public sphere.

Jonathan Thomas is a two-time alumnus of the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. He holds a BA in English Literature and Art History from the University of Minnesota, where he is currently working toward a PhD in the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature.
