Pomerio Grandstand/Labyrinth with Stage
Karin Schneider creates Pomerio Grandstand/Labyrinth with Stage for her Eastern European Residency Exchange at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, Croatia. Pomerio is an ambitious artwork for the construction of a labyrinth in a public park the downtown area of in Rijeka.
The construction of a labyrinth in the Pomerio Park—a work in progress-–is ideal for the presentation to children of a situation in which they can understand seeing the design of the labyrinth from both above and from street level, so when they are at the park, they physically experiment and play. The Pomerio labyrinth also functions as a grandstand designed as a free stage for anyone to be able to present their ideas and art to the local community, and consequently acts as a site for the preservation and enhancement of the vernacular culture. The overall design of the park, the grandstand and the labyrinth evokes the particular vernacular modernism found in the immediate surroundings and throughout the city. The vocabulary is that of orthogonal shapes articulated through quarter section circular curves, typical of 1930s and 1940s blending of art-deco and rationalism.
This residency and exhibition are part of Art in General’s Eastern European Residency Exchange (EERE) gives artists an opportunity to create a new work in a new context, and to meet and interact with art communities in Eastern Europe and New York City. Karin Schneider was nominated by Art in General to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka, Croatia.
