Hail to Red, White, and Blue

In an age overrun by the mass media and consumerism, Hail to Red, White, and Blue is meant to confront viewers with a literal fragmentation of their own image and identity. The installation features three vanity mirrors that sit atop a shelf upon which ivory soap and sponges are placed. Set against a blue backdrop punctuated with large red and white polka dots, the installation is meant to resemble an alter in which the viewer becomes both the object of worship and the worshiper. According to the artist, Thomas Broadbent, the incorporation of the mirrors, soap and sponges satirically suggest “the promise of salvation through personal hygiene.”
