Singular Visions
Tim Main, Neil Forrest, James Harrison, Elizabeth Smitt, Chet Augustine, Amy Cheng
Though diverse in style, the works included in Singular Visions are unified by an intense commitment to the content, rather than the form, of the work. Many of the works deal with the exploration of religious, spiritual, and mystical themes. The abstract paintings of Chet Augustine incorporate the use of religious symbols; James Harrison obscures the religious shrines in his work with the use of fine lines; Elizabeth Smitt juxtaposes historical and religious imagery in a deliberately unsophisticated format to convey the impression of religious folk art; Neil Forrest creates actual ritual objects that are embedded with tiles and obscure inscriptions; Tim Main ironically enshrines current events in mosaic images.
