Embracing The Earth/ Abrazando la Tierra
Through the use of self-portraits, Aimée Garcia portrays herself in settings that reference Renaissance and Baroque painting, yet subvert those traditions by incorporating blood, hair, lead, thread, pins, and needles into the surfaces. Garcia has stated, “I mix signs and symbolic artifacts of femininity with my own face in a fashion that is a reference to myself without being really autobiographical, creating meetings between history and my personal life. I use ambiguity to deconstruct myths and stereotypes that have made women the object rather than the subject.”
In conjunction with this residency, Art in General publishes a brochure featuring an interview of the artist by Antonia Perez. It can be downloaded here for free. For a printed version, purchase this publication along with the entire set of Art in General’s residency brochures in the online store for only $5.
