Sowon Kwon

1997kwon_p1_144_144For this exhibition, Sowon Kwon has borrowed a work by James McNeill Whistler, which she has installed in the gallery accompanied by specific lighting and “tasteful” décor. Whistler considered the selected interior decorations to be as important as his paintings. By recontextualizing his work in a contemporary context, Kwon examines the role of exhibition design, and simultaneously suggests an institutional critique of museum practices. Dialogues held with curators, art historians, gallerists, and collectors are on view as well. Kwon has provided documentation of the entire process, including bibliographies, interpretive texts, correspondence, and details regarding the work’s installation. A catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
