008airg497_8_lg_144_144Kitchen is a collaborative work by Tomie Arai and Millie Chen that uses the gallery as a gathering place. Over the course of four works, they collected materials and had conversations with Chinatown locals. Arai’s contribution focuses on the relationship between art and history, and investigates the role that memory plays in the retelling of Chinatown’s collective past. Chen’s work focuses on the way in which cultural identity is formed by language. For the final performance, a dinner was held in a domestic kitchen set up in the gallery during Chinese New Year celebrations.
