Alberto Casado: todo clandestine, todo popular

The first US solo exhibition of Alberto Casado’s work, this show presents works that address Cuba’s cultural, religious, and political issues from both the past and the present. Using a technique that he learned while working as a fabricator of “kitsch” religious objects, Casado applies serigraphic inks to various glass surfaces, which are then placed atop a layer of crumpled, painted aluminum foil; the result is a shimmering, luminescent effect that brings depth to his highly saturated colors. A catalogue was published on occasion of the exhibition, which includes essays by exhibition curator Holly Block and poet Orlando Hernández.
