Un Real Estates
The first US solo show of Cuban-born artist Maria Elena González, Un Real Estates features sculptural installations that are architecturally and personally inspired. Created using industrial materials, González’s work appropriates architectural symbols such as blueprints and symbols to allude to the political, cultural, and emotional coding of physical space. Un Real Estates includes five sculptural installations, which together reference closet floors, urban sprawl, her Cuban family’s footprints imprinted on welcome mats, as well as flying carpets—a significant image in González’s œuvre. The first catalogue devoted to González’s work was published on occasion of the exhibition, which was previously on view at DiverseWorks Artspace, Houston, Texas (2002) and the Art Museum of the University of Memphis (2003.)
