The works included in Child’s Play challenge idealized and nostalgic notions of childhood through a variety of media including painting, works on paper, photography, sculpture, mixed media, and installation. Invoking matters of gender, race, class, and sexuality, the works explore charged issues such as child abuse, drug addiction and teen pregnancy in the context of dysfunctional families. Other works employ irony, whimsy and caricature to comment on the cultural constructions of stereotypical childhoods.
