Art in General is pleased to present Nyeema Morgan’s You Are Here. This Is Now, a site-specific installation in the Musée Miniscule. You Are Here. This Is Now takes the prologue of a science fiction film and presents it as a static image. The light box displays a blurry and shadowy building with a time-stamp that announces the image is “20 minutes into the future.” As the elevator moves between floors, the message is omniscient, disrupting chronology and narrative logic. While the purpose of a prologue is to locate the viewer in a purely speculative "present,” the image here estranges the original film’s logical narrative, creating a continuous experience of the present, past, and future.
Nyeema Morgan is a New York based artist whose multi-disciplinary practice is engaged with epistemological systems and their hierarchical structure. In her work, which references familiar images, artifacts and data, she questions information’s conceptual value by rupturing its formal and structural gravitas. She received her MFA from California College of the Arts and is currently in residence at Abrons Art Center/Henry Street Settlement.
