Using unlikely juxtapositions of urban, rural and surreal elements, Kevin Carter evokes the disorienting experiences of immigrants arriving in the United States for the first time. The performance takes place in Cortlandt Alley, next to Art in General, and features live music and performances. The work culminates in a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. According to Carter, “There is a clear gap between the simple reciting of these lines, and the true complexity of what the words imply—for instance, the giving up of one country for another, one life for another, the known for the unknown. The USA is known as the land of opportunity, where the streets are paved in gold. I want to probe that whole mythology.”
