An installation and series of performances by Xaviera Simmons, How To Break Your Own Heart is part of the second installment of a new commissions program started by Art in General. For the installation, Simmons installed a music room complete with a DJ turntable station, over 200 jazz albums and a seating area. Intended to double as a performance space, Simmons invited bands to rehearse when she was not DJing. In addition, she has created two videos that form a visual collage of jazz documentaries and concerts through the appropriation of historical footage. The TV monitors are placed on a windowsill facing the street and are on view twenty-four hours a day.
