Melissa Martin: Father

Melissa Martin
Curated by Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy

Father is a new sculpture by Melissa Martin, and is the part of the first installment of a new commissions program at Art in General. Father is a life-sized simulation of Martin’s father’s body that uses over 300 pounds of chewing gum as its primary material. Molded and packaged to look like raw meat, the chewing gum packages are carefully arranged to trace the outline of a human body. Displayed in a custom-built commercial refrigerator, ironically called a coffin in the supermarket industry, Father will be sold piece by piece on the last day of the exhibition, possibly resulting in its complete disappearance.
