A large-scale life preserver is juxtaposed with an empty light bulb package in this installation created by Conrad Bakker. The installation explores the esthetic, symbolic, and iconographic meaning and significance of the culdesac, an artificially designed neighborhood that simultaneously draws people together and isolates them. For Bakker, the culdesac becomes a visual metaphor for suburban success and desperation, a “dead end” masquerading as the American dream.
