In 1987, Madeleine Burnside began Message Units as an audio work that was broadcast over her answering machine. Callers were invited to leave a message in response to the piece, which were complied by Burnside and transformed into an opera, complete with main characters and a chorus. Samplings of popular music are interspersed throughout the piece.
