Jacques Julien has created a series of sports-related sculptures that focus on the formal attributes of athletic equipment and environments. According to Julien, “sport is not a subject for me, it’s a tool.” For his residency at Art in General, Julien has taken the lines and boundaries of basketball courts and elevated them into sculptural form. His interest in viewer participation is expressed by the inclusion of a platform on which the viewer is invited to stand. A video will also be on view, which features basketball courts filmed by Julien across the city.
In conjunction with this residency, Art in General publishes a brochure with a text by Cecilia Brunson. It can be downloaded here for free. For a printed version, purchase this publication along with the entire set of Art in General’s residency brochures in the online store for only $5.
