For his residency, Rafal Bujnowski created a variety of projects that explore notions of simulation and duplication, and are comprised of paintings, photographs and a video. Inspired by the large number of children that visit Art in General with after-school programs, Bujnowski made a series of brown, monochromatic abstract paintings based on chocolate in an effort to appeal to the youth. In another series of paintings, Bujnowski photographed strangers during his daily commute to Art in General, which he then transformed into a series of portraits. For a video piece, Bujnowski documented flying lessons he took prior to his residency, which he then used for a series of paintings based on travel. Lastly, Bujnowski created a series of self-portraits based on his passport photo taken while in the process of obtaining a visa.

This residency and exhibition are part of Art in General’s Eastern European Residency Exchange (EERE) gives artists an opportunity to create a new work in a new context, and to meet and interact with art communities in Eastern Europe and New York City. Rafal Bujnowski was nominated to the EERE by the Bunkier Sztuki Gallery in Krakow, Poland.
