Fluxus Genetics

Skúta Helgason

For his residency, Skúta Helgason will perform the role of “laboratory technician,” investigating the lineage of Fluxus in a two-part research project that will be carried out under the rubric of a genetic DNA analysis. The first component will feature a map created by Helgason that traces the influences cited by Fluxus founder George Maciunas. Cultural and artistic artifacts such as books, movies, and records from the 1950s will be installed as a simulated living room environment. A second installation, referred to as the “Laboratorium,” features a site in which Helgason will trace the influence of Fluxus on contemporary artists. In this “on site lab,” Helgason will review slide registries of contemporary artists that will serve as “blood banks.” Individual artists will be invited to bring their work to the space for an in-depth genetic analysis of the Fluxus gene. The four artists with the strongest genetic links will exhibit their work in the gallery.
