This group show features works by five artists in various media that express intensified emotions by means of restraint. Using various strategies such as a restricted palette and minimal forms, the works in this exhibition suggest meaning through absence. Dez Ryan paints natural images in a limited range of colors; Thor Rinden’s square canvases are grounded by a governing geometry of inset squares, out of which a vivid color scheme emerges; Ilene Stern presents small-scale narrative paintings that feature imagery such as a beached whale and a boxing kangaroo; Carolyn Conrad draws and paints images of birds and figures on plaster; the wood constructions of Barbara Andrus use basic shapes such as discs set in squares.
