Commodity exchange is a closed transaction, one that leaves parties independent of each other. Gift exchange has the opposite effect: it creates a bond. Approaching artistic practice as a transactional enterprise, how can contemporary art processes and products be creatively situated within the spectrum defined by the poles of gift and commodity?
