"Patronage and Public Space" an exploration with William Smith

Public Program
Nov 4, 2006

How and why did Audrey Munson become the face of Manhattan in the early 20th century? By examining two sculptures on the Southern edge of Central Park in New York, this guided walking tour led by William Smith will investigate the complex patronage systems that initiated an upsurge in public art construction at the turn of the 20th century. Two sculptures that figure Audrey, the Maine Memorial and Pulitzer Fountain, illustrate the myriad private and public interests served by public art and offer a glimpse of the stylistic diversity of the American academic sculpture.

William Smith is a graduate student at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University, and assisted with the research This Site of Memory: Audrey Munson.
