A screening of films and videos, curated by Janet Kraynak (NYC) and Margaret Sundell (NYC). Program includes:
Hans Namuth, Jackson Pollock, 1950
Stan Brakage, Dog Star Man, 1964
Bruce Nauman, Walking in an Exaggerated Manner Around the Perimeter of a Square, 1967-68
Hollis Frampton, Special Effects, 1972
Gordon Matta-Clark, Splitting, 1974
Ana Mendieta, Body Tracks, Blood Sign #2, 1974
Jenny Holzer, Televised Texts, 1990
Cheryl Donegan, Line, 1996.
The selection of works expands upon and complements the art on view in the exhibition, and provides an historical context, as it traverses the period from the fifties to the present. The program focuses on ways in which artists have pushed the function and meaning of “line” beyond its traditional relationship to the medium of drawing throughout the postwar period. Approaches include line as an index of the body; as text features both works which explore these issues through the mediums of film and video, and others which record situations or performance events.
