Documentation of In the near future (2005):
In nine separate actions that took place from November 1-9, 2005 at various public locations throughout New York City, Sharon stood on the street holding a sign. Each day the sign had a different message drawn from a record of past protests or potential future protests. These actions were the first iterations of Sharon’s new project, In the near future, which investigates public expression and protest. While the passing street audience forms a general public, other audience members were invited to both witness and document the action. This, sometimes excessive, documentation marked each action as an “event.” In its presentation, the documentation is projected on nine separate slide projectors, allowing for a second reading that moves across and between the nine slogans.

Friday, November 4th, 8-9 a.m., Times Square, 44th St. & Broadway
Saturday, November 5th, 3-4 p.m., Central Park, 59th St. & Columbus Circle
Sunday, November 6th, 11 a.m.-12 p.m., St. Patrick’s Cathedral, 5th Ave., between 50th & 51st St.
Monday, November 7th, 11 a.m. -12 p.m., Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building, 125th St. & 7th Ave.
Tuesday, November 8th, 8-9 a.m., City Hall, Chambers St. & Broadway
Wednesday, November 9th, 10-11 a.m., Washington Square Park arch, Wash. Sq. North & 5th Ave.
